How to Fish

Article by Ken Clark

As an avid fisherman, I find that fishing is the most relaxing recreation for me. I love the out doors and I enjoy the struggle of fisherman against fish. Most people think that fish are stupid. That may be but I find that they can be as finicky as your kids at the dinner table when it comes to what and when they eat.

Know your target species. This is more important than what tackle or bait you are using. I grew up fishing with a Zebco fishing rod combo and I can not begin to tell you how many fish I caught on that pole. I used to tape the pole to my bike, throw in a few extra hooks and weight and head on down to the river or lake, which ever was closer. Knowing what I was going after was the key to my success or failure.

Know your tackle and baits. Although I said that knowing your species is more important than what tackle you use, you still need to know what fishing tackle to use from rod selection to what line to use. Although you might get lucky, you will probably have no luck using crawfish for bait when you are crappie fishing. Likewise, you probably will not catch a grouper on a trout rod and tackle.

Know your location. Although you can find many species in many bodies of water, some locations are much better than others. For instance a small lake that is teeming with bass is probably not going to supply you with an abundance of trout. You see, bass love to eat the trout. There are many things to consider when choosing where to fish and what to fish for.

Where do you learn to fish? Well you can learn from trial and error but this takes longer for success. I recommend that you 1) learn from your parents, 2) talk to the old timers, you know the ones around the fishing areas 3) talk to bait shop owners or 4) hire a guide. I can now purchase all my information on the internet.

Fishing Tid Bits How To Fish Part 2

Article by Dale Mazurek

Well I am back with my second article and it is exciting to see how many people are interested in the fun of fishing. These articles are meant for everyone. Some of the more experienced anglers probably know a lot about what I am talking about already but I think back to when I knew nothing about fishing. I wish there would have been something like that. Eventually this will be an eBook so take advantage of it while you can.

Okay now were going to talk a bit about rods and reels but mostly reels.
A reel is a device which lets you store an excessive amount of line on it. They allow you to cast way farther, fish in deeper water, retrieve your hook easier and in the case you get a big fish on you can control the fight much easier. The four types are fly, bait caster, spin cast and spinning.

Spin casting
We will start with spin casting because it is the easiest to use and it’s great for newbie’s just getting into fishing. The fishing line comes out of a small hole at the front of the reel. It goes down a straight handle to small guides. These reels are great for fishing pan fish such as perch or crappy.
Spinning Reel
A spinning reel is often called an open face real. The reason for this is because there is no covering on the line. The reel mounts underneath the handle and you can cast further because with the open face it allows the line to come off the reel with less restriction.
Bait caster
The bait caster usually has a straight handle. Once again the guides run on top of the reel. A bait caster is quite difficult to learn with because the reel turns with the line when you cast so if you’re not careful this is the easiest and quickest way to make a mess of your line that you probably won’t recover from without cutting the birds nest out.
Fly Fishing
In fly fishing the reel is really only used for one thing and that is to hold your line. The other reels use weight to carry your hook to where you want it to go but in fly fishing you have to use several arm and wrist techniques. Another thing that is important in fly-fishing is your momentum.
The one thing that is the same for all of these especially for beginners is that you will need practice to learn how to work them. Some are harder than the others with fly-fishing being the hardest but with practice everyone can become experts at the sport of fishing.

This will be the end of my second edition of my series on fishing. Keep reading my articles as they will get more informative and detailed as time goes on.

Fishing Tid Bits How To Fish Part 9

Article by Dale Mazurek

This is going to be my ninth article on fishing tid bits. So far I am getting a great response to these articles. They are meant to have tips that everyone can use. Most of the seasoned anglers might even find a helpful tip or two in these articles. Eventually I plan to hone this and turn it into an eBook so go ahead and take advantage of it now. Make sure you tell your friends and family about the fishing tips articles because all I ask in return is that you go out and enjoy the fine fun of fishing.

1. Water Color

In most cases the color of water can determine what color of hook you’re going to use. While this is not the absolute rule you will find it very helpful when trying to find something the fish are biting. If the water is murky then you are going to want to use something fluorescent. If the water is clear then you may want to use something more natural looking.

2. Docks And Piers

All docks for the most part look alike but what we have to recognize is the important differences. A dock with plants around it and deep water very close is going to be a great place to fish. Lots of anglers who own their own docks usually artificially attract fish by using tree tops and planting new plants in the water around their docks.

3. Mud Fishing

Just because the water is dirty shouldn’t be a reason for you not to fish. The fishing may be tougher but they haven’t gone anywhere, it’s just harder for them to find food…in muddy water conditions your going to want to fish shallow, use noisy hooks and make several casts in the same area.

4. Water Levels

Rapid rises or falls in water does have a drastic impact on fishing. Rivers rise or fall a lot quicker than lakes or reservoirs usually. These differences in water levels are usually because of a sudden change in weather such as spring thaws and quick rainstorms. The most important part about fishing at these times is for you to try and plan your fishing trip accordingly.

5. Bluegill Fishing

Fishing for bluegills can make for a very fun day. It’s best to fish bluegills on warm, sunny days. You want little wind and to be honest in these conditions it’s not uncommon for the fish to bite all day. All you have to do is use a simple rig with a bobber with a small jig tipped with crickets below it. My favorite color is yellow.

This is the end of my ninth edition on my fishing tips series. I hope so far everyone is finding useful tips that they can use or save for a later day.

Dale Mazurek

Just remember a bad day of fishing is better than a good day at work.

Fishing Tips – How To Fish For Lingcod

Fishing Tips – How To Fish For Lingcod

Article by Al Reynolds

When you look at this fish you may say the same when compared to a sea-run king or a mountain brook trout. Make no mistake however, when you are sitting at your table eating one of the best tasting fish you have ever had and remember the delicate touch it took to bring it aboard, you will sit back, rub your tummy and say, “Beautiful!”

I used to help run charter boats off the coast of Oregon leaving from Newport’s Yaquina Bay. When the salmon fishing was slow or there was a looming storm offshore a ways, we would fish for rock fish just south of the jetty about a mile or so. When I was out there bobbing up and down in a 35′ charter boat about 1/4 mile off the shore I was seeing sport fisherman watching us with their binoculars trying to see how we were catching fish. To me it seemed like there was no real secret to catching the Black Rock, Yelloweye, Quillback and other rock fish one would usually catch in that spot. What I came to realize was, that the binoculars would only come out when we landed a nice big ling cod.

I thought for sure everyone out there knew how to get the big ones but no one else was getting any. I have even had fishermen in their boats follow me back into the docks at the South Beach Marina many times just to ask how I was getting the 4+ ft. lingcod. When I told them how I was doing it, most looked at me like I was wearing a frog on my head.

When you are out fishing off the coast of Oregon you will quite often catch what I call a sea trout. This is a fish that is smooth (no scales) and spineless and pretty with green and yellow coloration. This fish is part of the trick to catching the big lings. Be careful not to kill the fish as it will be needed alive. Other fish will work also as long as they don’t have any spines on their body, are the right size, and alive.

Whenever we would get a couple of these sea trout that were about the size of a man’s stretched out hand (from wrist to fingertips) we would prepare our trap. Although the word “Prepare” infers that it took some doing to get ready, its really very simple. Our preparation consisted of gathering a treble hook, the sea trout, and a large hand net normally used for getting the salmon in the boat.

Rig your line with the treble hook at the end and nothing else. Pretty hard so far huh. When I am out fishing the coastal waters in a boat I keep a pole rigged like this, standing by. Now take the live sea trout and hook the treble hook in his lips in a manner that he can’t get away. You are ready! Take your pole and the live bait and send it to the bottom. Once the bait has reached the bottom take the slack out of the line so you can lift your pole and raise the bait off the bottom and then set it down again. Working the bait in this manner should be done slowly, raising your pole, then lowering it again letting the bait fall to the bottom. It usually takes about 10 seconds for one complete motion of raising and lowering the bait back to the bottom by lifting your pole.

The lingcod get enticed by the live bait you are slowly jigging up and down and, with their large, sharp teeth filled mouth, they will mouth the bait. They don’t swallow or tear up the fish but just hang onto it like a Pit Bull dog does when he locks his jaw onto something. The difference between a Pit Bull and a Lingcod doing this is where the Pit Bull won’t let go, the ling cod will release its grip on the bait once it gets to the surface. This is where the hand net comes in.

Once you have a fish on, you will want to have your net out and ready. You will know when you have a ling on because the line will get very heavy and as you reel in, it will feel like you have a swimming tire on the end of your line. Have your spouse, buddy, or whoever else is with you place the hand net in the water (still holding the handle of the net obviously) and with a scooping action, net the fish as soon as it is close enough to the surface to do so. If you wait too long, the fish will break the surface water and immediately let go of the bait and head back down to the bottom. If this happens, don’t get discouraged and just make another attempt. I have caught the same fish 5 and 6 times before because this method does not hurt the fish or even disturb them too much.
