DON’T GIVE THEM A FISH – teach them how to fish
Article by Betty Scott. BA, CBA, MBA Cert.
I love the development of a business system. It ties right into my belief that instead of giving someone a fish, teach them how to fish. Teaching them how to fish makes good sense if you can give them the tools and the knowledge. If I was a fisherman, I would have a binder that covers the following aspect of my life so that my grandchildren can read and use it as their “how to guide”.
How did grandpa end up having three seafood restaurants, a mortgage free house by the time he got to age 55 and a Lexus with a Fish Sign on his personalized license plate?
How to fish – Operations
Cost of fishing – Finance, budgeting and cash flow analysis
Where to distribute/sell your catch – Marketing
Making it look like fish never smells- Public Relations
Selling your fish like it is the best catch of the day- Branding
Teaching/passing on the fishing skills – Recruiting
Finding out why the Bermuda Triangle is not the best fishing grounds- Research
Developing methods to catch more fish using less time, fuel and equipment – Development
The same can be said about some aspects of our personal lives. As business owners and parents, are we sharing our failures and successes with our children? Are we showing them how to budget, save and negotiate (among other things)? Do they know what it means to have a mortgate, car loan and credit card debts. Are we getting them involved in our businesses from an early age? Do we try to show them the difference between going to work for someone else and creating their own employment? Are we taking the time to explain to them the difference between earning an academic degree and learning a skill?
What legacy will we leave for our children?I wish I had a grandpa like that. I would have had more winds beneath my wings.
